The case

Christina Morris, 23, was out with friends at The Shops at Legacy in Plano, Texas, in the early hours of August 30, 2014. Just before 4 a.m., security cameras recorded her walking into a parking garage with Enrique Arochi, a man she knew from high school. Minutes later his car left the garage. Christina was never seen again, and her Toyota Celica never left the garage.

Arochi told police Christina had never been in his car, and his account shifted as detectives pressed him. Video showed him cleaning his Camaro at a grocery store in Allen the day she vanished, and officers noted it had been freshly vacuumed. Phone records showed her phone traveling with his for about an hour after they left, and toll records tracked his car north. A coworker saw a bite mark on his arm. Lab tests then found Christina’s DNA in the trunk of his car.

With no body, Collin County prosecutors charged Arochi with aggravated kidnapping. A jury convicted him in September 2016, and on September 30 Judge Mark Rusch sentenced him to life in prison, with no parole eligibility for 30 years. On March 7, 2018, two brothers clearing brush in Anna, Texas, north of Plano, found Christina’s skeletal remains. An appeals court upheld the kidnapping conviction that July. Arochi has never been charged with her murder.

Why this case

“Three minutes of security video carried this case. When the jury decided it there was still no body, so prosecutors built their charge around what they could prove. Christina’s family then waited three and a half years before she was found in a field north of the city, which gave them an answer they had long expected.”
