The case

Estibaliz Carranza was born in Mexico City in 1978 and later settled in Vienna, Austria. With Holger Holz, whom she had married, she opened an ice cream parlor called the Schleckeria in the Meidling district in 2005. The marriage fell apart, and although Holz accepted a divorce, he kept living in their home and stayed in the business.

On April 27, 2008, Carranza shot Holz from behind while he was absorbed in a video game. She cut up his body with a chainsaw, froze the remains and later set them in concrete in the cellar under her shop. In November 2010 she drugged her new partner, Manfred Hinterberger, and shot him in his sleep, then disposed of him the same way. On June 6, 2011, workers fixing water pipes in the basement uncovered the remains. Carranza fled to Italy under a false name and was arrested in Udine on June 10.

Carranza confessed soon after her arrest and told the court Holz would not leave her alone and Hinterberger had been unfaithful. On November 22, 2012, a Vienna jury convicted her of both murders, and she was sentenced to life in prison with commitment to an institution for mentally ill offenders. Her appeal was rejected in 2013. While in custody she gave birth to a son in 2012 and was later moved to the forensic center at Asten.

Why this case

“The tabloids loved the ice cream angle, and it is easy to get lost in it. I kept coming back to Holger Holz and Manfred Hinterberger, two men whose families went years without knowing where they were. The shop kept serving customers the whole time, which is the detail I found hardest to set aside.”
