The case

Emmett Corrigan was thirty, newly licensed to practice law, and building a small firm in Meridian, Idaho. He met Kandi Hall in the autumn of 2010 and they were sleeping together two weeks later; he hired her as his paralegal in November. Both were married. By that winter her husband, Rob Hall, a civilian sheriff’s office employee, had worked out what was happening.

On the night of March 11, Hall was already waiting at a Walgreens on North Linder Road when Corrigan took Kandi’s phone and threatened to hurt him. Before getting out of his truck he moved a .380 pistol with a laser sight from its holster into the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt. There was a shove, then a struggle. Corrigan was shot twice, through the chest and through the head, and died there. Hall had a grazing wound to his own head and said he recalled nothing of the shooting. Kandi, the only witness, had her back turned, and the trial judge later said he had rarely seen a witness so completely discredited.

Hall argued self-defense. On October 25, 2012 a jury convicted him of second-degree murder, with an added count for using a gun in the crime, and in March 2013 he was sentenced to thirty years with seventeen and a half of them fixed. The Idaho Supreme Court upheld the conviction in November 2016.

Why this case

“Two men, one gun, one witness nobody could rely on. A jury still had to decide what happened in a parking lot in the dark, and they landed on second degree rather than first. I think that verdict says something honest about how much of this case could actually be known.”

Jason Neal, author of True Crime Case Histories
