The case

On August 26, 1995, Heather Teague, 23, was sunbathing on Newburgh Beach, a sandy stretch on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River in Henderson County. Around midday, a man looking through a telescope from across the river saw a shirtless man in cut-off jeans walk up to her, grab her by the hair, and force her into the woods at gunpoint. He called the police.

Kentucky State Police searched with dogs and helicopters and found part of Heather’s bathing suit and a towel near the beach. A farmer who had set up a video camera to catch vandals had recorded a red Ford Bronco parked nearby. The truck led investigators to Marvin Ray “Marty” Dill, a local man. Evansville police had stopped him in that Bronco months earlier and found guns, knives, rope, duct tape, and rubber gloves inside.

Troopers went to Dill’s home in the early hours of September 1, 1995, and he shot himself before they could question him. He was never charged, and Heather has never been found. Her mother, Sarah, has pushed police for records and answers for decades. Evidence was sent for DNA testing in December 2022, and on August 25, 2025, investigators exhumed Dill’s body to collect DNA. No results had been made public in the reports I found.

Why this case

“An eyewitness saw this abduction as it happened and called it in right away, which rarely happens. Even so, Heather’s family still has no grave to visit thirty years later. Her mother’s long fight for records and testing is a big part of why the case is still open, and it deserves as much attention as the suspect.”
