Rurik Jutting studied history and law at Cambridge and worked for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London before the bank moved him to its Hong Kong office in July 2013. He rented an apartment on the 31st floor of J Residence in Wan Chai. He was using large amounts of cocaine, and he resigned from the bank shortly before the killings.
In late October 2014 he brought Sumarti Ningsih, a 23-year-old Indonesian woman, to the apartment. He held her for about three days, tortured her, and killed her on October 27, then left her body in a suitcase on the balcony. On the night of October 31 he met another Indonesian woman, 26-year-old Seneng Mujiasih, who also used the name Jesse Lorena, and took her back to the flat in the early hours, where he killed her too. Shortly before 4 a.m. on November 1 Jutting called police himself. Officers found Seneng with fatal wounds and later found Sumarti’s body. His phone held videos and photos of the abuse.
At trial Jutting argued diminished responsibility, but a jury convicted him of two counts of murder on November 8, 2016, and he received two life sentences. He said he would seek a transfer to a British prison. The Court of Final Appeal dismissed his last appeal in August 2018, and he was returned to Stanley Prison.
